What Is Tinplate? A Versatile Sustainable Metal Material

Jun 01 , 2026
Tinplate, commonly known as马口铁 in Chinese, is a classic and widely used composite metal material in the packaging industry. It refers to a thin low-carbon steel sheet coated with an ultra-thin pure tin layer on both sides through electrolytic processing. The unique name of tinplate originates from ancient trade, when such tin-coated steel products were imported to China mainly through Macau, locally called “Mako”, hence the folk name.

Combining the advantages of steel and tin, tinplate boasts outstanding comprehensive performance. The steel substrate provides sturdy mechanical strength, ductility and moldability, allowing it to be cut, bent and pressed into various shapes. The surface tin layer acts as a protective barrier, effectively resisting oxidation, rust and chemical corrosion. Meanwhile, it is non-toxic, hygienic and safe for direct contact with food and daily products.

With excellent light-blocking, oxygen-isolating and moisture-proof properties, tinplate perfectly preserves the freshness and quality of contents. It also features smooth surfaces, fine printability and high hardness, supporting exquisite brand printing and customized molding.

Moreover, tinplate is an eco-friendly green material with an ultra-high recycling rate. Recycled tinplate can retain stable quality and be reused repeatedly, greatly reducing industrial waste. Nowadays, it is widely applied in food cans, candy tins, cosmetic packaging, gift boxes and electronic component packaging, becoming an indispensable core material in modern packaging manufacturing.
